The Problem With Alkaline Water
As stated earlier, alkaline water simply has a higher pH than tap water. pH value measures acidity or alkalinity on a scale of 0 to 14; a pH of 0 means completely acidic while a pH of 14 means completely alkaline. A pH of 7 is considered neutral; tap water has a pH of 7 while alkaline drinking water typically has a pH that ranges from 7.5 to 9.5.
How Alkaline Water Is Made
When water picks up minerals such as calcium and potassium from rocks, it becomes naturally alkaline.
There are devices known as water ionizers that have the ability to turn regular water into alkaline water. These devices use a process known as electrolysis (chemical decomposition) to alter the composition of water.
Research on Alkaline Water
Studies show that alkaline water helps to neutralize acidity in humans. A prolonged acidic state is not desirable; it can lead to many health complications.
“Acid wastes build up in the body in the form of cholesterol, gallstones, kidney stones, arterial plaque, urates, phosphates, and sulphates. These acidic waste products are the direct cause of premature aging and the onset of chronic disease.”
Dr. Stefan Kuprowsky, Vancouver Naturopathic Clinic
Supporters of alkaline water claim that it can sooth acid reflux, support bone health, reduce body fat, hydrate the body more effectively than normal water, and neutralise the acid in the bloodstream. These claims have been tested and they are mostly true.
So, alkaline water appears to have several benefits.
Nevertheless, some authorities make a distinction between naturally-occurring alkaline water (water with a pH that corresponds to the minerals in the water) and artificial alkaline water (made in water ionizers using electricity).
Some scientists believe that alkaline water can harm the body so it should not be taken for long periods of time. This is because it can raise the pH in the stomach, neutralise stomach acid, and cause digestive problems.
Studies to find out if alkaline water helps you shed fat are inconclusive; much more research needs to be done.
Finally, note that alkaline water is much more expensive than tap water.
Our position is that since we now know how to create naturally-alkaline water in a jar, there is no good reason to go for artificial alkaline water.
